9 Overrated Cities That Don’t Deserve the Hype

Forget what your college friends told you. It’s time to debunk and dethrone. Some cities are coasting on a reputation they no longer deserve. These are some of the biggest let-downs for jaded first-time visitors. Let’s cut them down to size

9. Dubai

Dubai can offer anything for the right price — except authenticity. Tall buildings, big malls, artificial beaches – all to compensate for a glaring lack of substance. Perfect for those with a lot of money and no taste.

8. Beijing

Kudos to the Chinese Communist Party for rebuilding one of the world’s most ancient and beautiful cities as a polluted industrial highway dystopia.

7. Budapest

A few years back, Budapest was all the rage less because it was exceptionally beautiful or interesting than because it was underrated for what it did offer. Mass tourism has since erased its modest advantages in authenticity and price allowing the city to join the club of hollow European Disneyland capitals.

6. Munich, Germany

Munich never recovered its aesthetics from the rubble of World War II. It has exactly one beautiful building. You can find better versions of Munich in Belgium.

5. Seoul

Nothing says “this is Seoul” like grey skies and a copy-and-paste routine of nondescript high-rises. Seoul doesn’t much look like a specific place or a specific time as much as an ambiguous lack thereof.

4. Tokyo

Who decided Tokyo belongs to the same class of city as London and Paris? Forget what you imagined; the Japanese capital is a dull ensemble of low-rise buildings from the 80s and busy inaccessible people.

3. Madrid

Neither old nor beautiful by Spanish standards, exactly what can redeem Madrid for its scorching summers and freezing winters? Certainly not its location at the furthest point from the coast in the Iberian Peninsula.

2. Berlin

The place known for being edgy, artsy, and vanguard has been colonized by normies and renovated into the 21st century, though much of the city retains a drab socialist grey that dulls the mind and weighs down the soul.

1. Prague

What a magnificent fall from grace! This medieval gem has evolved into one giant monstrous orgy of tacky souvenir shops, tourist traps, and tour groups. During the summer months, the streets become a living river of high-socked, fanny-packed vacationers while the locals remain as aloof and unapproachable as anywhere.
